Movie Opener Brainstorming & Research
1. Rise
Some observations:
-I enjoy the use of close up shots when using equipment such as the tying the shoes, shooting the ball into the net, and especially at the last scene where there are two parties facing each other the the close up highlights the fierceness of the characters emotions. This also sets up a constructive meaning behind the clip that ties well with the title of "Rise." This film gives the audience a emotion of intensity and ends in a sorta cliff hanger with these two characters having a stare-off. I appreciate the use of the music tuning in when the soccer player has his headphones on, but also tunes out when this character is not the focus of the camera.
2. Offline
Some observations:
-The clip was amazing with switching between two simultaneous scenes. Another noteworthy observation to be made was the intro where what sounded like a clicking keyboards was typing in the title name, which was something unique and it presented the audience with an ominous and mysterious feel. This was confirmed as there is this black hooded figure going through a person's profile to reveal their location and soon we are presented with the kidnapped person as seen in the profile picture.
Although my film opener would not fall into the horror genre, the opening title is an interesting idea that I would try out but in a different format.
3. Dear Lover
Some observations:
-I enjoyed the cinematographic presentation of the pond and nature aspects of this film as an introduction to the setting. After the title "Dear Lover" came on it was intriguing to see the camera focus on the characters, and narrative voiceover gave the film a unique perspective and a personal touch/feeling of closeness to the audience. This is an important aspect when it comes to making a romantic drama film.
I was thinking of also doing a narrative voiceover for the characters in between scenes or when necessary. This is a unique aspect that I would enjoy seeing in my film opener.
4. Dare to Thrill
Some observations:
-The 8-bit letters as the title sequence reminded me of a retro game and the movie of Ready Player One. This was especially intriguing with the follow shots of the ongoing car in the nighttime. Moreover, this clip gave the persona that the viewers were in first POV with the dolly shot of the characters going to the car. Overall, the fast paced film gave the viewers a feeling of adrenaline with the excitement that was about to bestow.
All the film aspects tied this clip together nicely and it is something I would like to see happen with my film opener.
5. Always Watching
Some observations:
-The wide shot conversation between the therapist and the main character while showing scenes of the flashbacks made this film opener interesting. As the film goes on there is a show of disturbing scenes of a kidnapping and the music add an eerie effect to the overall horror theme. Another important thing to point out was the opening as it depicted a black backdrop with red text that suggested this film was going to fall under the horror genre.
One aspect of the film that stood out to me was the music used along with the film to help foster this idea of a discomforting possible real life situation. I may incorporate music in my film opener and while it won't be a horror type I think adding some background music could help convey meaning and a feel behind the film opener.
6. The Blue Boar
Some observations:
-This opener reminded me of one of those Disney princess scenes where the princess is adventurous and about singing about their thoughts and feelings. The main character is shown to be disobedient and as the character runs off there is a lot of movement to this film that show synchronism with the theme.
I enjoyed the atmosphere of the film with the use of costumes to indicate the characters are in a different era. I think using some type of costumes in my film could contribute to an elaborate misc-en-scene.
7. White Coat
Some observations:
-What stood out to me the most in this film was the use of the close shots in mixture with the low lighting. There was also the edited special effects in the beginning as the title was written out in smoke that made the clip stand out. Overall, this film was impressive and it seemed professional with the pulsing background music and especially with the shots of the chemicals being poured into the glass beaker.
I think using specials effects is something I would like to see in my film opener. Maybe not in the title but in little snippets of my film opener.
8. Stalker
Some observations:
-I enjoyed the lead up into the opening title. This film was adequate with the element of suspense upon the use of loud sounds and eerie background music. Especially with the scene at the end the audience is left with a cliff hanger in a 1st person POV of the stalker.
It was interesting to see a lead up into the title and this is something I may want to do with my film as I approach the purpose or meaning of my entire film as the title expresses it.
9. Nostalgia
Some observations:
-I liked the symbolism with the painting and the house the old lady was living it. This gave the audience the feeling of nostalgia, especially with all the old photos and relics hence the title. The piano as background music set a calm and subtle tone to the film which was enjoyable.
The use of symbolism is a great idea that could be used in my film opener.
All in all, there are a lot of idea that I derived from these 9 film clips that I will be using towards my film opener project.
